8 EXHIBITION GENERAL TOPICS AND FOCAL THEMES General topics: Biotechnology and Environmental Protection Biotechnology and environmental protection are of paramount importance for the process industry – consequently they have a high profi le in all the exhibition groups. Processes targeting the conservation and effi cient use of resources and also emission control are an integral part of the process industry’s technology portfolio and are meanwhile well established in all sectors. As a result, the synergistic concept of production-integrated environmental protection has become one of the hallmarks of ACHEMA. On the other hand, nowhere is the integration of molecular and industrial biotechnology as tangible as at ACHEMA. Moreover, the penetration of renewable resources into areas of the process industry conventionally reserved to fossil resources has opened up novel, resource-saving reaction pathways that, in terms of effi ciency and selectivity, are far superior to conventional processes. Current challenges, such as the energy turnaround, call for innovative solutions – while at the same time triggering synergies with the suppliers. There is no doubt about it: ACHEMA once again promises to deliver exciting concepts for no less exciting challenges in 2015! The spectrum ranges from innovative methods for processing biomass, to equipment and plant for biotechnological processes and biobased products in the chemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, food and cosmetics sectors, through to novel processes in the fi eld of energy and resource conservation, water processing, recycling and air pollution control. All this is supplemented by the evident progress made since ACHEMA 2012 presented its focal theme “Energy carriers and storage”. To summarise, ACHEMA 2015 is once again set to be the technology showcase that defi nes the trends for the years to come. Focal Theme PAT: Innovative Process Analytical Technology Since automation has triumphantly conquered all areas of the process industry, the call for innovative solutions from online analytics has made it into the next round. Meanwhile a long time has elapsed since it was merely required to integrate sensors into the process chain. In fact, the holistic approach of PAT, combining process design, analytics and control, allows continuous tracking of critical process parameters and adjustment of critical quality attributes of the intermediate and endproducts. There is an increasing tendency for conventional sensors to be supplanted by spectroscopic methods which give access to more detailed process data and, in consequence, a sound insight into system components on the molecular level. Precise, real-time process analytics is, therefore, indispensable to future chemical production which has to comply with increasingly higher standards in terms of individualisation, quality control and process effi ciency. ACHEMA 2015 adds a fresh new note to this theme by introducing a ‘PAT tour’ for visitors who can either use the navigation app or the print version in the ACHEMA Special brochure that is available at all the entrances. Focal Theme: Industrial Water Management at ACHEMA 2015 For industry, water represents an indispensable component of its ongoing development. No wonder that industrial water management today ranks among the most important growth areas! Effi cient industrial water management provides industry with a wide range of economic and strategic advantages: For the process industry, it means that water, operating and energy costs can be reduced. Water, energy and valuable products can be recovered for production. For the global operations of the process industry, it can reduce the dependence on fresh water resources and unpredictable local restrictions and enhance production reliability. For plant engineering, industrial water technology generates a high value-added potential on the international markets. This can be traced to the increasing complexity of requirements and the need for individual and, in the majority of cases, customised plants. On account of its innovation potential and close links to production, industrial water management involves many areas of the process industry and the associated apparatus and plant engineering sector. Nowhere are apparatus and plant engineering so comprehensively presented and represented in process-oriented exhibition groups than at ACHEMA.
