China has since long caught up with the West in many technological fields, and in some areas has become the trendsetting nation which defines future standards. E-Commerce, online services and digital platforms are certainly one of these areas.
No surprise, China is at the forefront of digitization, electronic payment systems, online trading channels and service platforms. New applications and IT platforms are literally mushrooming, and even if some of them disappear as quickly as they showed up the whole mobile communication sector is extraordinarily vivid and heavily in motion.
According to a study by McKinsey, "China is the world’s largest e-commerce market, accounting for more than 40 percent of the value of worldwide e-commerce transactions, up from less than 1 percent about a decade ago. China has also become a major global force in mobile payments with 11 times the transaction value of the United States."
For western companies any successful marketing strategy in China has to be structured around the “BATS” – Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent and Sina. This means it is mandatory to combine purchasing or trading platforms with services like transaction, payment or delivery through the same channels in a consistent way, and bring together all of this with interesting, frequently updated content.
